Hi there

I am absolutely useless when it comes to putting colours together so I need some advice on tiles for a kitchen floor and splashback. The kitchen will be fitted next week and is cream/ivory with wood butcher block style work tops (dark-ish colour). This is a galley style kitchen with a breakfast bar on the other side - quite small and not the brightest of rooms. I would like something a little bit funky/retro for the tiles on the splash back does anyone have any suggestions and I also need suggestions for painting the walls - do I pain neutral or mad colours. Floor i'm thinking of slate or is this completely wrong.
Again, I have no clue at all when it comes to matching colours up so I would really appreciate any help.

Maybe keep the tiles neutral (cream/ivory) and paint the walls a pale duck-egg blue colour... or maybe a pale sage green... What aspect is the kitchen window? If the kitchen is really small maybe forgo the tiles on the splashback and use washable paint (kitchen paint is washable) instead, maybe put a stainless steel splash back behind the cooker hob only...

I thought that because kitchen is quite boring I could go a bit mad on tiles - like red or something??

Told you I didn't have a clue

Hi Ney001, i think glass looks fab.....definitely getting one for mine in near future from Turners Glass in Cork.....Another idea is to get a glass spalshback from Homebase they have 3 colours in the current catalogue and the vermeer red looks amazing and it is v.reasonable....size is not right for mine, but may work for you, Good Luck, FifiB

Thanks guys - think I'll stick with the red - i just like it! - plus I got nice red tins in TK MAX for sugar and tea (although my mother can't get over the fact that I would base an entire tiling and colour scheme around tins that are a fiver each! :p

I inherited multi-coloured tiles on my kitchen splashback, and EVERY visitor I've had since I moved in a month ago has commented favourably on them.

They are approx 4 inch square tiles in primary colours - red, orange, yellow, navy-blue, darkish green. I saw something similar in the panelling centre in more muted tones if you didn't want to go for the primary colours.

We just have the walls painted off-white as the tiles are so colourful.

ney001 - just saw your reply there! I did the same - based all my accessories on a red retro coffee-maker we had! Red canisters, bread-bin, toaster...Don't think the other half has even noticed!

My OH has a vague idea that the kitchen is coming next week but he didn't pick it out - didn't even see it in the brochure yet somehow I have him convinced that he wants a country style kitchen with retro accessories - poor lad thinks that the kitchen we picked was what he wanted - so if it all goes pear shaped I can blame him! :D

Never saw glass kitchen tiles before - must nip down there at the weekend and have a look.

would not recommend a glass or stainless steel splasback. they need to be kept immaculate to look good. they are a nightmare to keep clean.

Ditto...but they look lovely! Make sure they seal the glass really well or you'll have a problem with condensation which will drive you nuts. A bright colour is a good idea if the kitchen is narrow as dark colours draw in the walls!

We have a cream doors/beech worktops in our kitchen, magnolia (what else in a new house:rolleyes: ) walls & stainless steel splashback. We went for stainless steel appliances and blue/gray floor tiles...works well IMO

We were advised against getting a slate floor as apparently they are impossible to keep clean...so we went for a slate look tile

Tip from the pros, use baby oil on stainless steel splash backs! Keeps them looking well, just an easy wipe down required to clean.
