Buy new, secondhand or hold?

Three years ago we went to Brussels for a year (2003-2004).

We took the opportunity to purchase a new Renault Laguna for €17500. There was no tax since we were exporting it. The list price at the time was about €33000.

We now have a three year old diesel car with low mileage, on which we have no loan. It's in mint condition and has all the extras.

The current value of the car is about €14000-16000 depending on whether we trade-in or sell privately.

I'm wondering what course of action makes the most sense?

1. Sell the car privately and buy a new car? (We'd be very happy with another Laguna)

2. Trade-in the car with a main dealer for a new Laguna?

3. Trade-in the car with a main dealer for, say, a one year old Laguna?

4. Keep the car since we don't owe anyone anything on it?

5. Some other possibility I haven't considered?

Many thanks.

RS2K,

Many thanks for the prompt reply.

The second of your links is for a private sale and two owners. That explains the price, in my view.

The first link is to a dealer. One owner and very low mileage for an '03. I'd expect to get 10% off that for cash and have a good buy.

Ours is the 120bhp turbo diesel Super Sport. A very nice car. Dual climate control etc....

My problem (if indeed it is a problem! ;-) ) is that we got a bargain three years ago. But, does it make economic sense to cash in on that now, having had the car for three years almost for free? If it does, then what course of action is best?

Probably does. "Free motoring" is only a dream for most.

In an ideal world you'd sell your own privately and buy in cash. That may be difficult to do in reality and if so you'll trade in against a new/newer model. Either way you'll have to pay the dealer.

I was in a similar position four years ago when I was able to aquire a new BMW tax free. I kept the car for two years and then traded it in for a different marque cashing in on the tax free status and getting a new car into the bargain. I still had to pay the dealer plenty but I got a great car and it didn't cost me an awful lot. I'm not saying this is the right thing to and to be honest I think I will hold onto my present car for a few more years at least and can't see myself buying a brand new car again. Depreciation is a killer!

you seem to love your Lagunas...have you maybe considered anything else?

Personally if it was me, I'd try always to sell privately.

Seems to be a good car, you seem happy with it and it does not cost you much ..
Why do you want to sell it?

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, selling privately seems to be the way to go.

As to why I want to sell at all......to be honest, I don't. My wife does!
