buying a laptop

Hi Carebear,
Decide what you want to use it for (e.g. multimedia, basic processing applications, gaming) - that will help you to determine what you need, then you can seek out reviews and shop around.

I just want it for photo's, iternet and a basic word package. Think I'll hit the shops this weekend!!! thanks

I had this query a while ago, funds have not allowed me to buy it as yet, but 2pack gave me a good link to buy a dell laptop which worked out cheaper with memory from another site, perhaps some clever person might link it for carebear? I'll try but I'm not very good at doing it!

this doesn't look to bad for what you want.

I am lso in the process of buying a laptop(similar requirements). i would recommend calling into the laptop shop on the 3rd floor of the st stephens green shopping centre if you are in Dublin. They seem to be competitively priced and know what they are talking about without giving u the hard sell
I was advised when buying from dell to ensure i got a decent graphics card and enough usb ports as they dont include such items in some of their 'offers'. also check out laptopsdirect.ie - you will hear mixed reviews about this co but anyone i know that used them seem to be happy.
Also check dells outlet store, you might pick up a bargain here.
i would also recommended getting at least 512 ram and a 60 gig HD which u should be able to pick up for around eur 600-700.

Carebear, it seems everyone I know who has a Dell laptop says they would never buy another one. Aside from the exploding battery problem, they can be pretty poor performance-wise. Even though you are only looking for a basic model, I would advise you to stay away from any models which use a "Celeron" processor. They're just cut-price rubbish.

I'd advise you to go to a high-street vendor like Dixons or PC World where you can pick up great bargains on laptops and computers. And no, I'm not affiliated. I bought an Advent (PC Worlds own brand) latop over 3 years ago and never had a days trouble with it.

(If you go to PC World, dispense with the staff's advice, they're invariably useless. Do your own research on the web.)

Don't believe all the hype about Dell. They're not made with quality components anymore. Check out Advent, Toshiba, Packard-Bell, Compaq: all reliable models.

Does this shop have a name or is it just 'the laptop shop'? Do they sell peripherals etc. as well?

Seeking a new laptop too. Has anyone one of those cool looking newish white iMac or Apple things? Is the spec and performance as sharp as the styling?

i bought a sony vaio from the laptop shop in the green (thats the name of it) i shopped around and i was plesently surprised at their prices, gave me a discount too as i bought a few bits from them.

another cost saving option for ya is to download open office from net save you buying MS Office with the laptop.

ccovich . its just called the laptop shop. It has loads of gagets aswell such as itrip, routers etc. They have fm transmitters for eur 60, a bit pricey imo.
I got a price list from them and they are comparable to web prices. its always nice to know that you can bring it back to a shop if there are any problems.
alot of their lower end models do have celeron m processors which, from my limited knowledge are not the best but I am sure that it will be fine for the light user.

The spec and performance of the iMac (or MacBook if your specifically looking at laptops) is excellent. Many users who switch would never go back to a "windows" PC. They are slightly more expensive than a PC with like for like spec, but as they are two very different machines it's similiar to comparing a 1.6l estate to a 1.6l sports car - a true comparison can't be made (I'm not saying which is which, just pointing out they're different).

Lots of threads around on Apple computers if you wish to have further info, but if your just asking are they good..... Yes. If you can afford them.
(the navigation [different OS] is slightly different to windows so might be worth having a go on one before buying to make sure you like the setup.)
