Hi,
We got a quote of €850 to install a bath, sink and cistern & pan by a plumber. Is this reasonable?

Thanks in advance...

I got a quote of €750 about a year ago from a plumber in northside Dublin. I think it's a rip off but looks like that's what they're charging and getting now.

We have just received a quote for the following:

Remove existing Bath, basin and toilet.
Replace pipework under the floor.
Remove existing tiles (fully tiled)
Remove existing plasterwork.
Overboard ceiling and skim.
Dry line walls and skim.
First fix the new suite; new wastes and hot/cold feeds to be supplied to new suite.
Soil pipe to be replaced to allow for re-siting of toilet.
Fit new 1200 X 900 shower base.
fit new wc in different position.
fit new roll top bath in new position.
Tile to walls to height of 1000mm from floor on all sides, but shower enclosure to be fully tiled.
Fitting new 1200 X 900 offset quadrant shower screen.
Replace old radiator with new towel rail with radiator in centre..
Supply & fit 6 new low volt down lighters.
Fit new extractor fan above shower and vent through roof.

The bathroom is 11 feet X 8 feet and 8 feet floor to ceiling.

The labour cost quoted is £ 2980.

I would appreciate comments/advice.

We are waiting for other quotes to arrive.

Thanks

Hi Ian, sorry I'm not sure re quotes for just suite installation.

BillK, was the quote you received for 2980 euro? It showed up as 2980 pounds.

If euro, it seems to be a good quote compared to the one I just received from B&Q to re-do our bathroom, which is smaller than yours: 2.5m * 1.75m. Here's the breakdown I got from them:

Install 4sqm floor tiles
Install 10sqm wall tiles
Install towel rail
Install new suite (incl re-pipe)
Install extractor fan
Install shower screen
Remove&dispose of old tiles and suite

Labour cost: e3925

Seems very expensive to me, anyone got any thoughts? We are tiling only the floor and around the shower/bath.

BillK, might I ask who you tried for quotes? I was attracted to B&Q because they offer an all-in-one service, and I don't fancy the thought of chasing electricians, plumbers, tilers, plasterers... is that realistic in your experience?

Did you get it done or did you end up doing it yourself?

Hi Fullerand

It is pounds I'm afraid; I live in England.

We got the quote, the first one we have received up to now, from a plumber who works closely with the joinery company who made our replacement bay window and are making and replacing all of the other window casements in the house. They are also going to replace the existing bathroom floor with oak floorboards. (The cost of the floor is extra to the quote for the rest of the work.)
Both the joiners and the plumber are local tradesmen as I prefer to deal with people rather than companies - provided that the cost is not prohibitive.

I should point out that the house is 50 odd years old and is in need of a fair amount of refurbishment so we decided to bite the bullet and get it sorted.

To Billk
If you have not done so make sure you agree on a retainer when dealing with plumbing. Leaks may not manifest until the plumber's gone. I had a plumber who chased pipes in so quickly that - in my opinion - he did not give enough time to ensure the plumbing was water tight. Sure enough when he had gone a damp patch appeared and grew ... and grew. All is fine now but I wish I held back some money.
