Converting DVD to AVI

Does anyone know of a free, or cheap, method, of converting DVD content (TV series box set) to AVI format ?

I have bought software to convert AVI files to Pocket PC format. It's getting the content into AVI format that is eluding me. I have searched online for freeware, but no luck so far.

[broken link removed] will convert it to AVI using the DivX or XVid encoder.

DIVX Creator will do this as well, using the DIVX (MPEG-4) codec. The Pro version is only $30 ($20 for the software and an extra $10 for the DVD plugin). Works out at c. €24 which is good value.

At the weekend I spent some time on this but no joy.

Using a copyrighted DVD, and wishing to make a Pocket PC version of the same content, I ran it through DVD Decrypter. AutoGK couldn't use the outcome of DVD Decrypter, so I ran it through DVD Shrink to get the files in a format AutoGK could use (e.g. IFO, VOB).

I got further with this approach, but still no joy. Perhaps I set the compression rate too low - compression is not relevant to what I am trying to schieve here.

I've already shelled out on the 'convert to Pocket PC' software so was hoping to get it to AVI format without further spend.

What are you looking to achieve?

To get the DVD content into a format that AutoGK can process.

I am assuming I need to get around the copyright protection first and the format that DVD Decrypter leaves it in is not suitable for AutoGK.

Perhaps using DVD Shrink isn't a good method for this, though I may try it again with no compression .. just to see.

Have a look down through [broken link removed] article. It uses a combination of DVD Decrypter and AutoGK to backup DVD to AVI. There should be plenty of AutoGK tutorials around for what you're doing. [broken link removed].

I finally got all of this working last night.
Thanks for the pointers - this AV stuff isn't intuitive.

all the free stuff is a waste of time as they involve running multiple processes, take ages and are just too complicated.
i use "Xilisoft DVD to DivX Converter 4"
select your dvd drive
select the desired output format xvid/divx big/small etc
select the output location (archos gmini as usb hard drive in my case)
rip
thats it
its not free but it works and is simple
