Shannon security checkpoint

Is it just me or do other Shannon Airport users have views on the apparent waste of money on the manning of the checkpoint in to Shannon Airport?

It has been there as long as I remember (probably as long as the airport?). Today, it was being manned by three airport police.........and low and behold their question was.......brace yourselves.......... "where are you going?". I passed the test yet again, by answering "airport".

I apologise for posting the answer here and giving the correct answer to would-be terrorists and smugglers.

Yep.. I was subjected to the same level of intense interrogation last week.... & low & behold I managed to get through with 'airport' also!

It was actually removed from around 1995 - 2002, security was increased again after the fundamentalists started attacking airplanes up there. The lads out in the security box obviously aren't going to tackle anybody (usually its manned by just one Airport Police Officer), but if they see someone suspicious they radio up to the terminal building with the car/occupant details - airport police handle it from there. Its probably a good system in its own way, there's only 1 approach road to the terminal and everybody gets stopped.

I wonder whether they're there to detect terrorists or to stop from getting near the airport...

Pretty good value for the taxpayer in my book to deploy a handful of airport police there at an annual cost each of €40-€60k p.a. compared to bills of a few million every time a hippy takes a hatchet to the nose of a plane.
