Hi
Is it possible to trace websites that a Pc has logged onto , Or can they be deleted from the temporary internet files ??

from the PC itself you can delete the temporary files and cookies. However your ISP or workplace will probably still have the information logged. Yes, big brother is watching...

Deleting temporary internet files will not delete your history if someone who knows how and where to look decides to see what naughty things you have been up to! ;)

Many "tool"s will claim to completely erase the history from your PC (deleting never clears the information, just the easily found links to it - for it to really be cleared the area on the drive where it was stored must be written over). I've always wondered what useful application these tools actually have, but never looked into it much.
Google and I'm sure you'd find lots of links to this type of software.

[broken link removed] is a useful tool in this context. As is any browser other than IE!

even when you format the drive there can be residue left over - theres even a function within windows i think that can help find stuff thats been deleted. so what exactly deleted means is beyond me!

You could buy a mac, they have a 'secure empty trash' option that deletes and then overwrites the drive space that stored the unwanted material. Probably available in Windows 2012. :)

Loading the Browser onto a USB key can be an option here. I would recommend Firfox portable or OffByOne.The hard drive is not written to.However traces can be left if "external players" eg acrobat for pdf are used.It also possible to get portible mail applications, word (abiword) ect. Very useful for students ect who have to share & use different computers.

Eraser tools which do multiple overwrites of deleted files/free space can help to reduce the possibility of the original data being recovered through forensic analysis if you feel the need for this level of privacy. [broken link removed] is one free example.

ok, so youve been on hairywomen.com and dont want mum or dad to find out, clear the history, content etc from tools and options and youll be fine. so dad gets a recover deleted files utility. You have to pay for any decent ones so lets say hes done that, defrag your drive making it harder for the base cheapo utilities to recover anything. So then mum says, no I really want to find out what you were looking at so she hires a data recovery expert, make it harder for him by using , so then mum says, I dont care how much it costs, I WANT to know! so the recovery expert starts to read the magnetic bytes stored on the platters, if so try this [broken link removed]. If she restricts you from purchasing the magnetic eraser online for a 1000e, either throw out the pc or show her the site you were on and blame dad.

When you delete a file, the file itself is not touched, meerly the reference to it in the file allocation table.
