Problem with Fridge

We have an 8-year old fridge/freezer and lately there has been a lot of water on the floor of the fridge.

It appears that the water overflow channel at the back of the fridge is not functioning properly. Could this outlet be blocked and, if so, is it possible to clear it?

Where does this water normally go?

There shouldn't be any water in the fridge except when defrosting.
What is happening is that the door is not sealing properly and fresh air is leaking in, the water vapour in the air condenses in the fridge and causes puddles.
In normal circumstances that's what causes the ice buildup around the icebox.
So you have a faulty door seal or hinge. Check it carefully and maybe wash the seal in warm soapy water.

Just read your post again and I see it's a fridge/freezer, so there isn't an ice box in the fridge section.
There is a drain at the back near the bottom shelf which might be blocked. The water is supposed to drain out into a tray which is above the compressor and the heat evaporates the water.
You can clear the hole with a cocktail stick or something similar.
If there is a lot of water then there still could be a problem with the door.

any know is it possible to reseal a freezer door?
You can buy replacement rubber/magnetic seals for fridge/freezer doors and fit them yourself. Depending on the make/model it can be a bit fiddly but certainly feasible as a DIY job. Try your local domestic appliance parts store or online.

This site is unbelievable, talk about perfect timing! - the exact same thing has just started to happen to our 7 year old Whirlpool Fridge / Freezer.

I didn't know there was supposed to be a drain I must go and check

Thanks Sim Two for bringing this up
