I have just purchased my first car and it has no power steering. Am I mad some people say I am off my rocker and other say it only matters when parking.

You have bought the car-surely a bit late to be asking 'am I mad'-only time will tell whether it was the right decision for you.

whats wrong with no power steering? i don't have power steering and my car still works. its not really the end of the world lets be honest.

The steering will be a little heavier but against that it is one less theing to go wrong. Unless you are used to power steering I wouldn't be too worried. My sis hada starlet no ps for over a year and managed to struggle through.

What you never had ...you should never miss!.... You'll get used to it...it's not that far back when all cars in the country did not have ps...didn't stop anyone at the time.

Depends on the type of car: If it's an S600 merc it could be fairly heavy on the arms ( unless your Jarmila Kratochvilova ;) ), if it's a 998 cc micra you're probably ok :D.

Our first car (1 L Micra) didn't have power steering and was fine. Every now and again the steering used to get heavy, but that problem was due to the tyre pressure being out, so I would say check your tyres regularly!! We now do have power steering, and it's great, but unless you have arm/neck/back problems the lack of power steering is manageable.

I'm guessing that as you have bought the car you have driven it. Once you are happy driving it do you really care what anyone else may say about not having power steering?

Some cars will feel very heavy to drive without it and can be troublesome especially for a newer driver. Others, small hatch type cars in particular, will be no problem once you've tried it and feel comfortable with it.

My first car did not have power steering - it was grand. Obviously power steering is easier for parking etc but as someone mentioned if you have never had it then you won't miss it. Diff if you have power steering - its hard to go back to not having it.
obviously if i had a choice between 2 cars identical in every way except power steering & both were at the same price I would choose the power steering one.
But to say that you are mad to buy one is a bit extreme.

good luck with the driving

I havent driven the car yet as I am just about to embark on lessons. My friend has driven it however and says its grand

Our eldest had a car with no power steering. She found it a bit heavy but then discovered a slow puncture in one of the wheels. Got it fixed and never had a problem. Loved the Ka!
