Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF)

A family member is looking at using Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) technology to build a smallish house. While I'm sure it's a fine solution when done right, I suspect that its newness in this country means that there are significant early adopter risks, that it would probably work out more expensive than timber frame (the other alternative), and that it
could be difficult to source subcontractors to work on it (sparks, plumbers etc.)

Anyone got any advice or comment good bad or indifferent? Thanks!

I'd recommend ICF. Try polarwall.ie they have a good system. It may cost a bit more but you will have the walls up in two weeks and you won't have the mess and waste often associated with cavity block construction. You'll need to look at how you render / plaster the walls. You can plasterboard inside using screws to attach the plasterboard to the plastic in the icf. On the outside a metal mesh may be needed over the forms. If you intend putting stone on the outside for decorative purposes it'd be an excellent system.
You'll have very good airtightness.
euromac.ie also do a roof system to suit icf.
There are icf house currently underway in Strandhill, Sligo near bree's pub if you want to view the showhouse etc.
The houses have good thermal mass and you can add to this by using stone floors or solid internal walls.

The spark can cut out channels in the form for his cable duct. No difference to plumber except he can spec a smaller heat source.

Hi,

Can you confirm if you have any connection with this company? I'm sure you will understand that a newly registered poster with only 2 posts both recommending the same company does attract attention.
