A friend is looking to pick up a Sony Ericsson k750i (not a huge fan myself but they seem set on it) Sim Free. Asked me to see what I could find as regards best value for money.
Currently working in the UK (temp basis) should that help them to avail of any additional deals that they, or I, don’t know about.

At the minute the best price I’ve been able to find is £145.90 (Amazon) with free P&P ([broken link removed]) [also available on e-Bay (~£70) etc but it’d want to be a great price before I could convince them to go that route].

If anyone has any further advice on possible better deals or possible savings (being in the UK especially) it’d be greatly appreciated.

General comments on the phone more than welcome too.

Max memory card size of 64MB isn't great-but I don't know if this holds true, i.e. if you put in a 512MB card I don't think the phone would blow up.

I like SEs myself-I'm on my second.

Excellent phone. Consistently gets high ratings in technology magazines. Have one myself with 1gb memory card. Excellent user interface also.
Apart from the normal phone stuff it has a 2 megapix camera with zoom and good music player capabilities.

K750i comes with 64MB card but has same internals as W800i which comes with 512MB. I have a 2GB card in my K750i and it works fine. Have phone over a year and love it. Radio/MP3 player/torch/decent digital camera/video camera/voice recorder/address book/calendar. Also manage to use it as a pitch pipe and metronome. Barely use it as a phone actually!

Pity-I 'upgraded' (in a hurry) to a V600i from a Z600 recently-I don't think that the K750i is available on Vodafone.

The only thing about the memory card-I got a 1GB card from my gf's Nokia and it went haywire recently, but that could be just a fault with the phone or the cheap memory.

One thing I don't like about SE's is the headphone connection (I'm not sure if it's the same on the K750i as the V600i)-it's pretty flimsy (compared to new Nokia models).

The newer SE models (such as the K750/W800) have a single general purpose connector for charger/data/headphone. Special headphones come with the phone or you can get an adapter for normal headphones on ebay for about $5 inc. delivery. I go through one every few months, which is annoying, but at least the stress points are on the adapter rather than the phone. Other thing is the max MP3 volume is too low to hear soft music on public transport. Think this is due to max output regulations in France and elsewhere rather than a hardware limitation.

haha, very true these days with many phones. Think a friends phone gets more use as a remote (bluetooth) for the laptop when playing music or DVDs and certainly as an MP3 player than as a phone.

Happily agree that the SE is packed full of features, but my own problem with it is that it just seems a little too bulky and heavy. I've also never been a fan of the SE menu system but that's purely a personal thing and I'm sure a user would adapt to any system with time.

The real question is the cost side of things (anyone know of a deal that beats the £145 and I'd be delighted to hear it), I'm pretty sure they'll end up going for the k750i, but while I'm rambling on I'll also ask if anyone has any views on the Motorola SLVR L7 (£124)?

Not quite as heavily equipped as the SE k750i, but I personally like the slim line design of the phone. I've yet to try the menu system on it, but have heard it can be a little confusing at times until you get used to it. If someone has firsthand experience of both their opinions would be great.
