UK speeding fine/penalty points

Myself and my brother hired a car for a weekend in England in June. The car was hired through his credit card and my name was added as a second driver. On the second day of driving I was at the wheel and was caught by a fixed speed camera. Back in Ireland my brother subsequently received a speeding notice from the UK Police/Fine section (the car hire companyhad passed on his name).
As his name is on the official correspondence he rang the helpline on the form and was advised to complete and return the form.
We are not sure if we should proceed further on this or take legal advice. Informal advice suggests we return the form with a registered source of payment, i.e. sterling bankdraft but leave the form otherwise blank.
Has anyone ever been in this situation before? Any information/advice would be appreciated.

From my understanding Penalty Points are "non transferable" between the Uk and Ireland, hence the speed of the northern cars on the motorways in the south !! I'd suggest that the system works both ways, but changes are being made to rectify this. I'd say go with the advise of paying the fine but leave the details blank as previously suggested.

You do not have to pay the fine as the incident happened in a different juristiction. The Uk cannot put uk points on an Irish licence and vice versa. There is talk about getting a cross border agreement in relation to convicting and fining drivers, but as usual it is all hot air. Dont pay the fine

Good grief what nonsense. You commited the crime so must pay the required fine. Points will not apply in this case since they currently cannot transfer (and count yourself lucky about that).

Got a speeding fine on the princes highway in Au's 2 years ago for 50 dollars and ignored it,a month later got another letter and warning that if fine wasn't paid now 75 i would be prosecuted in a court, a month later another warning and fine up to 125 and a month later 175 and notified if it wasn't paid I'd be barred from hiring a car from Avis worldwide and they would notify all other hire companies so I paid fine and got a great thank you from the road authority for promptly paying my fine, They were not going to give up were they?. so "you may as well pay it first as last"

I'm sure that they will chase you for payment regardless of the points. Bad debt agencies all over the world have companies locally that they can contact to enforce a payment from someone.

Better to pay it really.

Two years ago I received a parking fine in Scotland for £30. My friend parked illegally when I was not with him. The car was hired in my name. I thought no more of it until a sum of money was taken from my credit card by the car hire company, the value was almost the Euro equivalent of £30. Two week later I received notice from Falkirk court informing me that the fine was still owing. I informed them that I thought the fine was paid but it turned out that the money taken from my account was an administration charge by the car hire company for given my details to the Scottish police. I still paid the fine in the end.

Pay the fine as you may want to hire a car again in the future.
