Pet door in sliding patio door

Hi,

Anybody ever had to install a pet door into a sliding glass (patio) door? I am not sure if the glass is tempered and if it is, I believe it will shatter when I try to cut it. Our dog is a labrador and if the glass is not tempered and she runs through the door and knocks it hard, the panel will break, won't it?

Anybody has any clever ideas?

Thanks :)

Hi,

Welcome to AAM.

Would definitely recommend that you don't do anything with adjusting the door yourself. You may find something useful

Assuming it's double glazed we're talking , it involves a whole new pane with slot pre-cut. Imagine costs €200-300 and I'd says keep orginal pane in case ya move.

Hello,

There are doggy doors that are made for glass sliding door. Basicaly it looks like a really narrow glass door with the doggy door built in to it. To install you open your own sliding door, then install the new "panel" with the doggy door. They have security devices also and are made with tempered/shatter proof glass. But I don't know where you can get one in Ireland, sorry. You can see one on www.petsmart.com. Go to dog section, than doors and gates and you will see the petsafe deluke patio panel doors. Put they are American based but that might give you an idea of what to look for.

Has anyone actually had this done or been able to get something like the sliding door inserts they sell here? http://www.petdoors.com/panel_pet_door_info.htm

Can't seem to source anything similar this end of the world & shipping from the States is obviously huge!

Just to bring to your attention the fact that friends of mine had a dog flap built in - unfortunately "somebody" pushed a small child through, who opened the door from the inside and the place was cleaned out.
