Hi,

I received the VHI renewal for our Public Plus Day to Day care. It has increased by €110 annually for 2 adults and 1 child.

Is this an average expected increase? Last year and the year before, the increase was about €10 and €15, respectively.

Thanks

Any idea if I call the VHI team and try to negotiate the annual premium? Would this work like it does for car insurance premiums?

Have never heard of anyone haggling over their price with VHI and getting a discount for the same policy. It would appear to be the case that they might recommend a different policy which sometimes would have the same cover for a cheaper rate. The policy that you have at the moment does appear to already have basic cover.

No, it won’t. Health insurance is community rated so an insurer offering a discount to one person but not another is illegal.

There are some exceptions for young adults and group schemes but you won’t fall into that bucket.

Only way to reduce your premium will be to change your plan/provider.

As Ireland’s population ages, we’ll all need to get used to private health insurance going up substantially year on year as there’s proportionally less young people to subsidise everyone else.

If Slaintecare is ever fully implemented, many people can drop their health insurance, as private care will be removed from public hospitals, and waiting times should be less.

In the Uk there is public care but many still have their bupa etc.

Challenge it.Thanks to Sue Ellen who suggested speaking to the supervisor ( I am in the cooling off period) I complained about a policy I was given. Their customer service last year suggested I moved from health access to 100day to day andI got hardly any refund. I paid and extra 400 for 100 back. I was not happy and I complained. They moved me from one group scheme to another and first offered 5% discount. Then I asked to see if there was any movement and I got 10% discount. I did not speak to the supervisor but the agent I spoke to did help. I said I was going to go to the regulator as I was miss sold the policy. Been with them 20 years.
