Joint assessment or not? Partner on Carers Allowance

My partner is on carers allowance, no other taxable income. Usually this is not taxable if it is that persons sole income however I can’t find out any information on whether or not it is taxable should the person in receipt of carers allowance become jointly assessed.

I would like to get married but it won’t be an option if I end up paying more tax as a result.

Surely marriage must occur first, before a couple can elect for joint income tax assessment?

Calculate the combined income tax bill under both scenarios.

(1) both single
(2) married

Either way there are huge tax benefits with inheritance, ie, no CAT payable by spouse.
