Hi

Just want to see where i stand. Walked in to a supermarket today, i have a pre-paid MasterCard with over 100e on it that i received as a gift for Christmas, i attempted to use it to pay but i was point-blank refused. No explanation, no reason, no apology just " we cant accept that card " - when asked why "silence".

It's a MasterCard, full look and feel, only difference is that it doesn't have a chip and pin, i have to swipe it. I have used it in several stores already, but this one in particular just would not take it.

Do i have any consumer rights here? - can i take this somewhere? or should i just take it on the chin and never shop in this store again?

They were very rude about it actually, so i would like to put in some sort of complaint.

cheers

Was it Marks and Spencers by any chance? I had the same problem with a Pavillions branded gift voucher. Its a pre-paid mastercard like most these days. but their view was we have our own voucher. Where as my view was "i dont care, its a pre-paid mastercard, so you can't just not accept it because it says Pavillions on it. Bottom line - they took it. it worked. but you need to be prepared to tough it out!

It was FRESH on Camden Street. My Prepaid card was "PerfectIncentive" branded, though the issue they had was with the fact that it didnt have a chip and pin. I did ask to speak with the Manager and he, conveniently, was standing right beside her and also said the same words "its our policy" my response was " im pretty sure your obliged to accept the payment method as its advertised in your window" - his response was " no we dont " and pretty much walked away from me

If this happened to me I would never shop in Fresh again. The city is full of convenience stores.

I had the same issue with Marks and Spencers...it didn't bother me particularly (used it in Dunnes) but it's interesting to know that Marks have that policy.

Agreed. Have not and Will Not be shopping there again.

No law - but they are breaking Mastercard's rules . You can complain to Mastercard if you want . There may be contact details on the card? Or try here

Cheers. I have lodged a complaint with the card issuer and sent a note to MasterCard. Also sent on a complaint to the store, will hope to get a response soon.
