Are Skype Marriages recognised in Ireland? From what I can gather they are recongnised in some American states, in the UK and in various other countries. Does anyone know if they are recognised in Ireland or where I should go to find out?

In short, No. Both parties must be present.

Thank you Slim. Do you know who or what is the legal authority on that, so i can print something off and show that there is legislation on this?

Interestingly, if a marriage is legal in the country it takes place in, then Ireland will recognise the marriage

The importance of recognising a marriage revolves around entitlements to Irish assets in the event of a marital breakup.

Registering your marriage or civil partnership
If you marry or enter into a civil partnership abroad, it will only be recognised in Ireland if it is registered in the country where the ceremony took place and provided all legal formalities have been followed.

I found this on the Citizen Advice web-site:

"Your foreign marriage certificate will usually be accepted for official purposes in Ireland where you need to show evidence that you are married
Although you must meet the foreign requirements for formalities, you are still bound by Irish law as far as the capacity to marry is concerned."

Which does suggest that a 'skype marriage' should be recognised here if it is recognised in the country it took place.

Sorry, l seem to have misinterpreted the question. Skype weddings cannot, yet anyway, be held in Ireland, by Irish registrars.
