Hi All,

It is my Mother's 70th birthday in February and she would like for us all to go away for a weekend somewhere in Ireland. Need your recommendations!

There are 12 adults and 9 kids. Most of the kids are over the age of 6 - eldest being 12 - there are 2 toddlers and 1 small baby.

Ideally we would like for my parents and the couples with no kids to be able to stay in hotel/country house and the families have their own space in a cottage/self-catering attached to the hotel.

We want some good activities to keep everyone entertained and at least one fancy dinner over the weekend to mark the main occasion...my Mum's birthday.

We are based in Leitrim and would like to keep the journey to about 2 hours!

Any tips?

Thanks in advance,
Niamh.

Friends of mine have just booked Waterford castle for their mums 70th! They did a fair bit of research and it came down to there of Faithlegg. I think they got a really good deal booking it on pigsback.

Probably a bit too far away for you. I think the way they whittled down the list was by looking for self catering on a hotel grounds, with activities for kids pool etc.

Waterford Castle is probably a bit far.

We did this for Christmas 2011 and went to Druids Glen. Our numbers were very similar to yours. Not sure if they have self catering though as we all stayed in the hotel. No problem with interconnecting rooms for family. We also had a posh dinner and they catered for us very well and gave us a separate area with the kids at a table beside the adults. Food was good too. We also got a separate area in the lounge afterwards where we could all relax. The kids were made feel very welcome. Regarding activities on site they have a pool, gym, spa, games room, bike, playground, golf.

i have seen this hotel on pigsback.com too.

hope this helps.

Braeffy House near Castlebar has hotel and lodge accommodation as well as activities and should be within your two hour limit from Leitrim, it might be worth a look.

Might be best to avoid Waterford Castle at the moment:

Though the operator has resumed services one never knows ....

Two hotels in Gorey - Ashdown Lodge and Amber Springs. Near enough to Courtown to bring kiddies to show them the sea, the 'sailing ship', some amusements. Both hotels withing walking distance of restaurants, pubs, town, great shopping. Both have gyms, spas etc. I'm sure they'd do you a deal for a crowd booking!
