I tried to contact my local bank yesterday by phone. After jumping through all the hoops (press button - 6 options followed by 3 others followed by the usual security questions) I finally have a human being and requested a cert of interest.

I then asked for similar for my OH who was standing beside me and was about to hand the phone over to OH when the person told me he could only deal with one customer per call so I must hang up and OH start all over again.

Is this new policy or bueraucracy gone mad?

Standard practice.

I used to work in a call centre. You have only so long to deal with each call. So the person at the other end would end up in trouble for handling 2 accounts in one call.

Wow and there was me thinking that customer service was about the customer! My bad.
