Getting to Florence

Hi all,

I'm booking a trip to Florence in october and flying from Dublin to bologna on the Sunday night. Is there trains that run at 9pm from bologna airport to Florence?

Tc

I haven't used Bologna, Pisa worked out as handy for me. Bologa Airport is about 6 Km from Bologna central railway station.

Take a look at using Sunday 21st Oct as an example.

The last train is at 9:28 pm so it could be tight!

I would stay in Bologna. It is a good train journey away, can't remember how long. What I do remember is the train anouncements are of course in Italian but at the last minute changed the arrival plarform and there was a frantic rush to get it.

I think something like this would be easier to deal with early morning, not late at night. I would avoid the stress and stay. It's a lovely city.

Pisa is a little closer and has some trains from the airport to Florence directly (others changing in Pisa) so it's a little handier from that point of view and the trains are cheaper.

Bologna Station is a cab or bus ride from the Airport (about 20 mins) and I think now they've build the high speed line from Bologna to Florence there's not so many normal trains and the High Speed trains are pricey enough.

If your flight gets in as planned at 2030 then you should make the 2128 from Bologna, definitely if you don't check bags through.

Train is only €13 if you book now through

would have you in Florence just after 10pm. Bologna is well worth checking out if you get the chance though.

Thx guys for the quick responses! It's an anniversary trip we are doing and my wife doesn't know. We can't fly on the sat as I had first planned and that's why I'm nervous about the Sunday trip. Here's hoping the flight isn't late!

I have travelled via Pisa with Ryanair and the train waits to connect with the flight. Comfortable journey as far as I can remember.
Florence has a lot to offer wonderful museums etc.

Browtal has it right.
Musts are the climb up to the top of the Duomo. Great views over Florence and you can marvel at Brunelleschi's construction of the dome.

The Uffizzi gallery is another must; you used to be able to book in advance for your entrance tickets, but it's been a few years since we were last there.

Another interesting church is the Medici family church within walking distance of the Duomo at Piazza San Lorenzo. (Donatello is buried there.)

I love Florence, but the Uffizzi gallery is one of the biggest anti climaxes of my life. I was extremely disappointed with it. But if the op is really interested in seeing it you can indeed still get advance tickets for it. They give you a particular time to go in at, so you just turn up at the entrance at that time.

Ulfizzi Gallery is amazing. Definitely not an an anti climax for me. I didnt pre book, just showed up early and the queue wasnt too bad. The galleria dell`Accadamia is also worth an early morning queue.

Personally, I think you'd be cutting it fine.

Are you checking in bags?

Have you checked how long it would take to get to the train from the airport?

If you don't make the train, you'll have to find a hotel for the night at short notice - not the best start to the holliers!

Hi The Courier,
I have just found the name of the hotel that we stayed in Florence 2 mins walk from centre. Not more than 5 mins walk from everything, Hotel Della Signoria, it is very basic and in traditional Italian style, large rooms. Very clean, breakfast is good. May not be suitable for a special occasion.
A day spent in Sienna, about one and quarter hours, may be the highlight of your trip. It is a beautiful old walled city, easy to pass a few hours or more there. The bus is the best method to get there and costs about €7.
Eyewitness travel is a great ref. book for the trip and will ensure you have information on everything to see and do.
Have wonderful trip Browtal

We stayed at the Palazzo Nicololini which is about 50 metres from the Duomo. Excellent rooms and breakfast - waitresses in black dresses, white caps and white gloves.

All staff leave at about 7pm so you are on your own as far as service is concerned.
