Risky to book flights to Greece for August/September?

Hi there

We were thinking of travelling to Greece this year for a short visit to Athens and then the rest of our time between one or two islands.

I don't want to book flights and accommodation if its a case that I will end up not being able to travel if the economic and political situation worsens. Any advice or speculation to offer? Would it be wise to forget it and book something else?
 
I think its very risky , If I were you Id go somewhere else , strikes ,civil unrest , desperate population , its just not worth the risk IMO. It aint getting any better there anytime soon. I Travelled around the Greek islands many years ago , really beautiful but even then in the late 80s strikes were rampant and boats were cancelled it seemed on a whim.If its an adventure your after ...go for it ;)
 
On the other hand you may get a real bargain because so many people share GDUFFY' S well-founded views

Yep, well the flights are v reasonable at the moment. But as mentioned by GDUFFY, as I will be travelling to the islands by internal flights or boat I would be worried about transport strikes or worse. If they end up leaving the EU and a doomsday scenario occurs then I could be really screwed. Hmm hard to know what to do but probably not worth the risk.
 
Would you be covered if you book everything by credit card ?

Booking.com have a 24 hour cancellation without penalty policy, I think alpharooms.com do too , book hotels through them so you can cancel at short notice.
If you book make sure you factor in the price a very good travel insurance policy which covers cancelations delays etc. maybe this will insulate you from loss of money.
Greece is a lovely country with lovely people and history, If you box clever you may just get the holiday of a lifetime :D
 
I wonder if the Greeks are thinking the same thing about coming to Ireland. Hardly though, we wont be taking to the streets to protest and will criticize those who do. But, bargains are to be had in Greece, I would go.
 
A friend had real issues trying to book ferries to the islands. The mails they showed me from the ferry companies were comical to say the least... they seemed totally unorganised - basically could not guarantee that they would sail.

Otherwise I wouldnt be put off too much. Book by credit card would be the main advice.

Economic unrest would hardly be a big risk would it? Either you'll be paying in Euro or you'll be quids in if they convert to drachma.

Political unrest? Again a red herring I think in terms of a holiday - yes there may be protests etc but how would they affect you do you think?

The main worry I'd have is if workers go on strike and you can't get access to services - but they have a massive tourist industry to protect, I cant see them jeopardising that.
 
Why do you need to book it now? Wait and see how things develop.

If you have to book something now, book the flight from Ireland to Greece if it's cheap.

You should have no difficulty at the time of finding accommodation and internal travel. If the ferry to one island is cancelled, go to another island.
 
I was there last year. Taxi strikes were a real pain. Make sure you have contingency plans should one or more type of transport go on strike
 
Well I was going to book it now while the flights are cheap - like anywhere else, the longer you live it the more likely they are to shoot up in price.

I suppose my main worry would be getting from A to B. Ferry / Taxi strikes. Also if the euro went bang then there would be a possibility there would be inflation..or armageddon if we are to believe what we are told would happen here if we don't do what we're told by europe;)

I might leave it a while and see how things pan out. Cheers!
