NIB Removing ATM's

In recent years:

Now NIB are removing some of their own brand ATM's. On May 18th 2012 NIB are "withdrawing the service" of "several" ATM's.

I am also informed that the future of several more NIB branches is "under review".

Surely, the next step for NIB is to go online only.

Take a trip some day to the home country of National Irish's current parentage (which is also the country where NIB is registered/regulated).

In Denmark, the ordinary citizen uses about 10% of the amount of cash that the equivalent Irish person uses.
Cheques have been abolished for almost all purposes in Denmark
Fees are a standard part of banking in Denmark, and more so for anything that is not self-service
There are a lot less bank branches per 1m population in Denmark

Don't know about Danish savings accounts

Cheques are pretty much abolished all over Europe bar very few outliers.
I have lived in a few European countries, and always had charges on my current account.
For the last one outside Ireland, I paid 45 Euro per quarter - that included all transactions, self-service account statements (printer in the branches), 1 Debit card, 2 credit cards.
Just on the savings accounts: Take a look at current interest rates in Germany as a comparison.

Looks like NIB is actually moving to what I would call standard banking: Bring down costs, charge high interest for lending money and pay little for savings. Might be boring but at least it doesn't require bailouts :)
(I don't know if NIB's parent company had a bailout)

I doubt that AIB, BoI, etc will follow this road soon given that political pressure.

Myself, daughter and son have current and esave accounts with them we have had our letters and I told them last monday unless they waive the fees we are off to Ulster WE HAVE KEPT CONSIDERABLE BALANCES THERE OVER THE YEARS LOYALTY OBVIOUSLY MEANS NOTHING!
Anyway had an email Monday that someone would get back to me needless to say I'm still waiting! So I'll give them a week and then they can take a running jump.....

Wouldn't surprise me if NIB exited the country. I have a mortgage with them and a current account as per the deal. Abolishing cheques would be a pain though. I use them the odd time for paying tradesmen and so on.

Does anyone have a link to the news about them removing the ATMs?

The media have not reported this yet.

NIB have started posting notices to ATM's ...
