Buying African ETFs.....

I read an interesting article in the Sunday Times about 10 days ago on the potential for Africa - Chinese investment, growth of democracy, improving infrastructure etc etc.

I have a reasonable spread with Rabo Direct funds which I am happy with, but they have only a very loose option on Africa (as part of EMEA). So I was looking for a company that offers exposure to African ETF and don't have large transaction costs.

After a bit of googling I came across fundsdirect (a money supermarket), they offer 2,300 funds but you have to sign up with them before you can see the range of funds.

So, I am wondering if anyone has any experience of these guys and if so are they recommended, or are there any other low cost alternatives that people would recommend where one could purchase African ETFs?

There's an ETF called AFK which tracks the African Titans index. I know you can buy that through TD on the US markets - not sure about other brokers. It offers good exposure to the SEN countries (South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria). It has a relatively high expense ratio for an ETF (still really low for a fund) but it's an interesting pure play.

African ETF

I suppose if there is an African Titans ETF it is crying out for some provider to bring out an African Pygmies ETF ?

I was just wondering why I haven't yet seen mention of a "419 ETF". The ETF guarantees to return you $15,000,000 regardless of your initial investment. It's underwritten by a member of an African royal family. All you have to do to apply for this ETF is send the issuer a fax with your name, address, phone number and bank account details...
