Can Anyone Recommend decent car for under €2000?

Our beloved '95 Audi A6 just died even though she'd been going great guns and had a fantastic engine & low mileage for her years. We are flat broke, I don't mind saying, but need a replacement. Can anyone give me a few tips on reliable makes/models on our very low budget of max €2k?
Or better still, what to avoid?!!
I'm presuming with the backside out of the economy, we might actually get good value for our humble budget....
Would love to spend more but it is just not possible at the moment.
My husband is very tall, btw, and needs good legroom and he likes big, sturdy cars that can take us from Dublin to Donegal in comfort?
I can hear you all laughing as I type this but I live in hope!
 
Listen people get carried away with cars and your 95 A6 has served you well. Big cars tend to be cheap and anything above 10 years is going to be cheaper again. I guess running a 95 car you will know that with NCT annually, extra fuel costs and the like. Have a look on Carzone they have a nice interactive slider selection system that allows you to tick off the cost, fuel type and body type that you want, the results you get will show you what you can get. The problem with older cars however is knowing the history and taking the risk with that age.
Have a look and see what you can get for the money and then get an AA check. They can't guarantee a pristine car but at least they will avoid you buying a complete pig in a poke.
 
Search "Bangernomics" on boards.ie. For reliability late nineties/early noughties corolla or better still Yaris if size doesn't matter.
 
For reliabilty best stick to Japenese generally, especially at that age. Though service history and low owners would be top priority for me for a car thats probably going to be 10 years old or so. Honest John, Parkers and Reliability Index (google any of them) will give you some ideas about what to look out for.
Check Mazda6 from 01 on, or if you can haggle well you might stretch to a Honda Accord from 03 on.
Saab 9-5 02 on would be comfortable, and very good value by comparison with otehr preemium brands like BMW and Audi, but reliabiltiy might not be as good as the Japaense. Really depends on individual car though - anything that's been worked hard will be liable to issues regardless of brand.
If you do enough research and spend a bit of time finding the right private seller and ask the right questions you'll have no problem getting a decent car for 2K.
 
Thanks very much for your advice, folks. Hubby going to look at an 02 Audi for around 3.5k in Dublin today, also a Skoda (eek?). We'd be hoping to bargain the Audi down to around €2,800 - or am I a complete eejit?

What worries you about the Skoda? You're hardly going to buy a 1987 version? :)
