NIB To Stop Accepting Cheques

http://www.independent.ie/business/...cept-cash-now-says-no-to-cheques-3001869.html

A bank which stopped taking cash in 2010 will now no longer accept cheques.
NIB wrote to thousands of its customers this week saying that, from April, it will not allow them to lodge cheques at their 28 branches nationwide.
The Danish-owned bank stopped taking cash in its branches two years ago, but it has now gone a step further.
Bizarrely, the bank offers customers cheque books, but won't even accept its own cheques for lodgement.
At the start of 2010, it become the first cashless bank in the country.

NIB are turning into a bit of a joke bank (aren't the all). Other banks should to refuse to process NIB Giros and cheques.

Cheques and Giros have not been used in Europe for years, it's about time Ireland caught up!

I have not owned a cheque book in 15 years, people just use the Maestro card or cash for the newsagents or the supermarket, a bank transfer for paying large amounts, with a credit card falling in between the two.

What a joke! This really is hard to believe. But this is my favourite bit:
NIB insisted the ban on cheque lodgements would benefit customers as branch staff would have time "to focus on sales and advisory services".
And sure don't we all love being sold stuff by our bank and getting their great advice . I want my bank to look after my money and give me access to it when I need it - and that's pretty much it. I don't need advice and in the unlikely event of wanting to buy something from a bank (money?), I will shop around independently.

+1

Have not used a cheque book for a couple of years. Was forced to get a bankers draft a couple of times within the last 2 years - by businesses that are living in the dark ages! Couldn't take any other form of payment but cheque (or bank draft).

Personally I only use my cheques for paying tradesmen. Though the do come in handy now and again. I will be sad to see them go.

I reckon NIB will pull out in the next few years, they will probably move to an online presence here and just service their existing loan customers.

What I don't understand is why if NIB are a "cashless" bank, why my local branch has all manners of door buzzers just to get in, while I can just walk into my local Bank of Ireland (which does accept cash).

Caught between the pressures of providing free or low cost banking, while covering their costs, I expect more banks to follow the NIB lead...

Eh, not true. Something like 20% of all the worlds cheques are issued in France. It's impossible here to get by without a cheque book.

Personally, I have only ever used a cheque once in my life.

I think NIB will move to online only for retail customer and shut their branches. Seems like an obvious next step.

I also think NIB will move the focus of the bank to the SME banking sector.
