Anyone gone on this ? I was looking into this as a short break for a laugh with a few friends. It's over two nights with about 7 hours in Cherbourg. Not taking the car, just going as foot passengers. It's reasonably cheap at around €115 a head incl. a cabin.

Couple of questions:

  • Is the ship ok entertainment wise etc. None of us are drinkers, but we'll enjoy the craic if it's to be had.
  • How is shopping in Cherbourg? As none of us drink, we'll be looking more at other items. Some fags/booze as gifts, clothes, other stuff?
  • Anything worth doing in Cherbourg on such a short visit?

France

Went once, nice ship. but if you want to save money youcould go with different companies

Food on board is expensive, but not bad in quality. I would not expect much in the way of an entertainment package outside high season. The boat itself is fairly comfortable.

The best shopping in Cherbourg is more than a stroll from the ferry terminal (out-of-town centres) so you might want to take taxis. Cherbourg is not enormously appealing, as it was badly damaged in the war. I don't want to be unduly harsh: it has a few nice bits and pieces.

For me, the best shopping in Cherbourg is wine and tobacco (pipe tobacco for me). Customs and Excise in Ireland willingly tolerate your bringing back 800 cigarettes for personal use, and tobacco products in France cost about 50% the Irish price (and the French think them very expensive).

Onboard entertainment is ok but I would not pay for the pleasure and the food is expensive as Padraigb said. It would only be worth it if you took a van or car and filled it with wine and fags, IMHO. Cherbourg is surprisingly interesting, WW2 fortifications etc but in all honesty, I wouldn't go without a car. Sea can be rough too.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll give it a miss. Definitely don't want to bring the car, and apparently you have to take out all your luggage when you get to Cherbourg and lug it around. Sounds like more hassle than it's worth.

Wow! Didn't know that. That would be a pain alright! I only used the ferry for onward travel.
