Claiming back on travel insurance?

Has anyone any experience on claiming back expenses on travel insurance?

I am in the process of doing this and I'm just wondering what the best way of doing it is.

I've contacted the insurance company by email with all the details and I haven't heard back from them in over a week. I contacted the financial ombudsman and he said that he would handle it once I got a response from the insurance company.

Thanks in advance.

Jinty.

bear in mind this is peak season so there is probably going to be a long waiting list for them to get through. Did you attach read receipts to the email? That can give some indications. Personally, i would call them and ask if they had acknowledged the claim and offer an indication of how long it may take to process. Can take a while though.

Normally you should call them (or email them, but in this case seems email isn't working) and then they'll open the claim ticket and assign you a reference number

Once you've got this reference number from them then you can fill in the official forms .. it sounds like you've not got a claim reference

Make sure you've got all the details and fill the form in honestly and it should be fine - it's important to keep a copy of everything you send them (receipts etc.) ... I think you can only go to the Insurance Ombudsman if you go through all the company's procedures and still haven't' gotten any satisfaction.

I'd give them a call to make sure your claim is registered.

Thanks EvilDoctorK,

That's exactly what I needed to know.

I'll get on to it on Monday.

You're right with the busy season Flossie - I forgot about that.

I'll let you know how I go.

I had to make a claim once & it did take time, but the company rang me to ask another couple of details, which was fair enough, until she asked if I had"all risks" on my home insurance & why didn't I claim on that! I did have it but said I didn't & they processed the claim ok. I couldn't believe she asked me that and didn't know why I would claim under my house insurance when I had the travel insurance.

Where you have two insurances covering the same risk, each insurer pays half of the claim.

I just claimed thru the travel insurance & didn't bother with the house ins because I was worried that it would increase my home premium.

theres a deadline too usually at least with vhi travel insurance.i almost missed mine. so get your claim in early . waiting for a letter from airlines etc to prove your case can be frustrating.

Thanks guys.

I've filled in a claim form from the insurance company and I'm waiting to hear back. I'll let you know when I get a response and what it is.

Just to update you all, the insurance company has replied and said that I am not entitled to reimbursement as I didn't contact them before my flight.

I've contacted the financial ombudsman.
