Golf has become so predictable. The bookies were all right. That new up and coming exciting golfer from Northern Ireland wins another major......oh wait

Amazing alright.
3 weeks ago Mcilroy became one of the youngest winners of the US open and now Clarke has become one of the oldest winners of the British open.

It was brilliant to watch. Only problem is that I now owe my girlfriend about 4 weekends of doing what she wants to do after spending the past two days glued to the couch. That can't be good. I bet there is a trip to IKEA involved!

On a side issue, do you think Health Ministers and Anti-smoking groups were holding their heads in their hands? They spend millions on campaigns, introducing smoking bans, banning advertising and sponsorship etc etc. Then the camera follows the British Open Champion walking down the fairway with a fag in his mounth! Jimenez and his cigar as well. They are an inspiration to all of us who left healthy living behind a long time ago!

Clarke is very fond of cigars too!

When Mcilroy won, there were calls for NI to get a chance to host the British Open. Now with 3 winners in just over a year, there must be a strong case.

The best bit is watching the English papers turn from cheering for Donald, Westwood and other English golfers to cheering for a 'UK' winner!

Delighted for Clarke....great to see someone with such natural talent do the business. Love those punchy shots he hits so effortlessly. NI golf tourism will be a boost too me thinks.

Why do people always think that sports stars should be role models?

Did you see what he did with his butts. Just tossed them on the fairway. Is that a role model?:(

Didn't like that either to be honest. If Tiger Woods was doing that the commentators wouldn't hesitate to point it out, but as Darren is more of a "people's" person they didn't. Also when Darren or Jiminez smoke a cigar it's almost celebrated but there is disdain towards cigarettes for some reason. A bit strange Ted

The BBC touched on that point on their one o'clock news. I don't know about any of the other golf clubs in NI, but they said that Darren's home club could never host the Open as it does not have the local infrastructure to do so regarding availability of enough hotel rooms, quality & size of roads, proximity to major airports etc etc.

There were suggestions this evening that Northern Ireland will look to host the Irish Open next year. I think it'd be great, especially given that the excellent G.U.I. is an All Ireland organisation and golfers born on this island play on the Ireland team when it comes to international amateur competitions.

And, who knows, we might see a return of the Carrolls Irish Open, with Darren as the main attraction! ;)

Did anyone else think that Rory sounded a bit sour about his tournament 'I don't like tournaments that are decided by the weather conditions' it seemed kind of insulting to Clarke, but maybe it just reads worse than it sounded.

That'd be great alright Lex. Great win by big Darren - and by the state of him in the interviews yesterday the celebrations were pretty great too! :D
