Travel Insurance small print

Just about to get family multi-trip travel insurance and read the small print. It would seem under cancellation/curtailment clause that we would have not be covered to return home if a close family member, parent sibling, relation is serverely sick or passes away due to any existing medical condition or even an investigation for a condition or on a waiting list, previous to us taking out the policy. Would this apply to all travel companies? I phoned customer service to check and they confimred there would be no cover for cancellation/curtailment in this circumstance where there is a pre existing condition of a close family member. I initially assumed the people travelling would be covered if curtailment of a trip was deemed necessary in an very serious emergency, but it seems not, if the relative has an exisiting medical condition.

No. All policies exclude pre-existing conditions. If its likely to occur they arent going to want to cover it is the logic!

Have to agree, the curtailent or cancellation will only apply to a sudden death or illness to a family member

All travel insurance companies have the same small print

I can understand in cases where someone has an pre-existing condition and is seriously ill, but it would seem harsh if the sudden death of a relative with cancer occured where that death was genuinely unexpected at that time.

I am not facing this situation, but I am interested in knowing if an insurance company would cover this.

I know when I worked in the industry ( long time ago!) we weren't heartless. If there were extenuating reasons we might vary the terms of cover and include what might be excluded,or at least negotiate. Not everything can be included in a policy document, and borderline cases were considered case by case, but often to the client's advantage.

In these recessionary times I've found that approach to have changed with a lot of companies, unfortunately :(
