Some scanger periodically abandons a shopping trolley on our road which a: looks crap and b: sometimes with winds bangs in cars and scratches/dents them.

Is the supermarket to whom it belongs responsible for removing them?

Quick answer is yes and they will do so very quickly if you give them a call. Shopping trolleys are very expensive to replace.

I would also write to the manager of the branch and ask why there is no device attached to the trollies to prevent them leaving the grounds of the shopping area in the first place, and what is their policy regarding damaged property from a 'rogue' trolley.

One could hardly blame the supermarket for the carelessness of people using and abusing supermarket trolleys.

Nearly the entire population of Ireland Ltd needs to be instructed in simple civics. If it aint abandoning shopping trolleys, its driving crazily through red traffic lights, dumping empty chip cartons, dropping luminous yellow/green energy drink bottles in public places etc.

I would like to see the authorities introducing laws (like in some parts of Spain) that if you are caught red handed at littering or urinating in public places you are immediately handed a shovel, brush, disenfectant and made clean up a public area 50 metres each side of where you polluted and you are supervised while doing it.

.

This explains it for me - those who are car-less are taking trolleys for spins. The solution is greater access to driving instruction and if the banks start loaning money for people to purchase old bangers this would sort this issue out for once and for all....

Its obvious, If they can put an underground security system in place whereby you cannot leave a supermarket with a trolley of goods that are not payed for without the wheels locking why dont they do the same for the boundary of the car park.

Presumably currently you move it back to the supermarket. You could try the strategy of returning it instead to the 'scanger's property, who hopefully will desist in leaving it outside your house and presumably drop it off at one of your neighbours.

Very interesting idea.

They have that at the Lidl near us but we still see trolleys on the street.

Equally annoying are the morons who just abandon their trolley in the middle of the car park allowing it to roll into parked cars or overturn in the wind and bash against something.

On a (slightly) related issue, a stationmaster at a rural railway station here in England has been sacked for removing an abandoned shopping trolley from the railway lines, on the grounds that he did not follow the Health & Safety procedures!

Yeah, imagine expecting anyone to follow safety procedures when running around train tracks - that's just crazy talk.

How does the scanger get onto your roof?
