Opel Astra - Problems

I was wondering if anyone would have any ideas as to what might be wrong with my car, I drive a ’99 1.2 opel astra that I bought 3 months ago. Within 3 weeks or so of getting it, it started to act up on me, please bear with me while I try to explain what happens..

Ok, start the engine and the car revs and then comes back down to a stationary position, as the car starts to move the engine management light comes on and the car starts to chuck (like it would if you were about to stall) also when sitting in traffic say the car is revving itself while my foot is no where near the accelerator, to stop this I turn off the engine and restart and the problems are gone…One of the guys in work said the same prob happened with his merc and it was the oxygen sensor, so I ordered a new one and he replaced it last week for me (he does his own so it’d be changed and connected up correctly) the problems however haven’t gone and since the new sensor was put in my petrol gauge isn’t registering any petrol in the tank, the light is constantly flashing and the gauge is showing empty even though I’ve a half a tank in it..

I don’t get paid for another 2 weeks so can’t bring it to a mechanic, I thought I’d ask to see if anyone has any ideas as to what might be wrong (I’m hoping its only something small as I’ve the nct booked for 2 weeks time)

Thanks a mill for any help

I had the exact same problem with a 99 Opel Corsa I had a few years ago. Had to leave the car at the side of the road coz I couldn't drive it. Just started revving up and down and the engine managment light came on. Can't remember exactly what the problem was but it was just a burnt out chip that had to be replaced.

Neighbour had a very similar problem with an Opel Kadett (03/4 I think). Cost a fortune in investigations, and the problem didn't get fuly sorted. She eventually got rid of it.
