My partner was driving today and I was in the passenger seat.

I saw a man standing outside a private residence in the gateway. He pointed something at us and there was a flash. I'm assuming it was a laser speed gun. Was the flash a camera taking the reg number? If so will be getting a letter in the post for about 2 km over....

Are you sure it wasnt just some fella with a camera? A hand held speed gun doesnt have a flash attached. Its just to detect speed.

He had on a bluer shirt and dark slacks. Didn't see any badges or shoulder lapels or even a squad car but it all happened pretty fast. And there was definitely a flash. He had one arm up shoulder level and the other was holding the thing and was resting on the arm.

No you wont be getting a letter. If it was a guard with a handheld speed gun, he has to stop you and give you the ticket there and then. Also, you wont be done for 2km over the speed limit.

Also, there are tolerances on your speedo, they over-read slightly. If it said 2km over the limit, you can be pretty sure you were under.

Feel free to challenge me on this; but it's what I've understood previously.
If the speed gun is hand held, they can only issue you with the penalty there & then if the limit was broken.
If the speed gun is mounted (as in the gatso vans) they can be posted out to you.

As it was handheld, and you weren't stopped..the issue is a non-issue? Nothing happened. Nothing will happen. And you weren't breaking the speed limit.
