Hi,

I got my front brake disks swapped out a couple of months ago and they squeeked slightly for awhile after, this went but now its back and if im turning the wheel to either side sometimes im hearing like a scratching sound, like metal rubbing i have a feeling theres something wrong with the brake disk itself. Car is a 08 leon, should I just go back to fast fit get them to check the brake disk, I cant see it being the brake pads as they are only new.

All advice appreciated.

Could be the "splash" plate (don't know correct name) which is fitted on the inner side of the disc to protect from the worst mud etc (I think). Anyway, it is made of light metal and can easily be bent by an over zealous brake fitter and is now rubbing slightly off the rotating disc. Easily pushed back out. If you remove the wheel you will see it.

Had this problem with a Renault years ago. There was a small bit of play on the front bearings, when turning it allowed the disk plate to rub on the pads making a scratching noise.

I changed my front brakes a couple of months back too and they're still squeaking - really annoying. I was told it might be because I put in spurious ones?

Often blamed, and are often the cause of the problem too, but , not always.

Where there are anti-squeal shims fitted, were they cleaned and greased?

Anti squeal is for when you apply the brakes, Note that the PO says also that there is scratching noise when turning the wheel, this is nothing to do with ant squeal shims

Thank you Roker, but I am well aware what anti-squeal shims are for and when they come into play. I am assuming that the squeal, mentioned in posts above, occurs when the brakes are applied.

Note the OP also said his brakes were squealing (squeaking, his word) and that was what I addressing as should have been apparent from my previous post to Lorz.

SparkeRite. Sorry did not mean to imply that you were incorrect, just that there is 2 issues here.

Hi,

Car has been to get checked out and even do I thought the noise was coming from the front right wheel the back left brake was actually needing to be replaced. I had thought there was a few more thousand miles left on the back brake pads.

I got both of my back brake pads replaced so hopefully thats the last of the noise!!
