Hi just wondering can anyone tell me the cost for the swine flu jab? I heard its free if you are in the high risk category but my health centre is not too sure, they think it's €40 and only free if I had medical card. No mention of cost on the HSE website and no answer on the HSE helpline. Can anyone advise??

Well my wife is currently pregnant and was advised by her GP to get the flu vaccination as she was classified as high risk. Boots were offering it for €30 but will not administer it to pregnant women. Her G.P organised for her to get it at the local health centre and they confirmed that it was free if your GP arranges for it. When she went to leave, she was informed that while the vaccination was free, there would be a €40 administration charge :(

Thats grand peter thanks for the reply. My girlfriend is also pregnant and was worried bout getting the flu.

My Wife got the jab on Thursday for e30 in the Meridian Clinic in Dublin, shop around you even beat this price.

Thats really quite shabby behaviour,If it were me I would change GPs.

I wish they would all get their stories straight. I was told by my GP that it was free in the local healthcentre (I'm pregnant) but when I rang them they said I can only get it through my GP, which I did for E30.

That seems so unfair for pregnant women. They are sitting in front of their GP anyway during their free antenatal visits getting checked out but have to pay E30 for him to jab them for something which is highly recommended for pregnant women. It's not like the E30 is for a consultation.

The visits aren't free; the GP gets well paid by the HSE (the tax payer).

The swine flu injection was given out free last year by the HSE who had set up outlets where one could obtain the jab.

. . . and guess what, some of our contributors here were complaining about the service.

Now you must visit your GP where the nurse will give you the jab and the doctor will give you the bill.

From today's Irish Times:

HSE changes flu policy for pregnant women
In a significant change to national influenza vaccine policy, family doctors have been asked to recall pregnant women who have been given the swine flu vaccine so that they can also be immunised with the seasonal flu vaccine.
