Just wondered what the regulations are if I get rid of the TV, and only use RTE player, and DVDs on my computer. Do I still need a TV license even though I cannot receive live TV broadcasts?

Thanks

Assuming your computer does not have TV card installed then the answer is NO you do NOT need a license.

I got taken to court a few years ago for trying that, you must get the TV and any receiving apparatus out of the premises. Also remove the TV aerial.

I thought it meant anything with a tuner.

Someone at work has a flatscreen monitor hooked up to a PC and internet and (I think) the inspector asked to see it. Said it was ok.

Did you remove all ferrous material from your premises? Including wire coat hangers, cutlery, the Iron from your blood? etc, etc... All can receive radio waves.

I know it sounds a joke, but that is what the Post Office told me, it sound more like a tax than a licence. Even though I paid up before the court case, I got the probational act. no fine.

I will be getting rid of it as well.

There is an old 1970s TV without remote control in the house belonging to the landlord.

Should I just hide it?

Ask the landlord to remove it, or offer to bring it to a recycling centre for them if you can. So long as it's on the premises, you'll need a TV license.

I had heard some suggestion that they would put the license on any device that could use the RTE-Player also (ie any internet connected PC). The availability of online streaming and downloads is making the TV license very tricky to enforce in it current form.
