Thisis the way it is done in London

. 10kg of free grit is available for each household in the London Borough of Sutton. Proof of residency will be asked for so please take your council tax bill or a utility bill with you.

Great idea, but the payment is probably included in their Council Tax.

I have a relative who lives in the UK and even the dumps there for large items are free because it's all included in the Council Tax. Helps to cut down illegal dumping - they should consider doing something similar here.

I have no doubt the householder has to pay at some time. But at least the local authority is making some effort in cooperation with the householder.

Our councils have been only average in their response. I know they will say that it is down to resources. It does highlight the effect that the removal of domestic rates has had on local services.
Local councils used to have a quite big workforce of general workers who cleaned paths, cleared blocked drains etc and were always available at times of weather severity such as floods, snow and storms

My local council cleared main roads. Thats it. No estates, no footpaths. People are slipping and sliding all over the place and according to a news report I heard there is a slew of 'fell on ice' related injuries showing up in A&E using up valuable resources in the hospital.
