Hi Guys

My bank sent a very personal letter intended for me to a neighbor of mine. It was with my name but there address and it gave them all my credit card details as well as my dealings with the Irish credit bureau. The neighbor rang and complained 6 days ago but they only got back to me today and tried to blame it on the postman. I called round this neighbor who was very helpful and still had the letter. Its sent to there address and not mine and you cant make out my name unless you open the letter. They tried to tell me that was my old address they had on file even though i have never lived out of home. I can barely face my neighbors as the whole family saw the letter and im fairly embarrassed to have all this out in public as well as having to change credit card numbers now and everything.

What are my rights here

It presumably was a one off typed letter with 35 on it, instead of 39?

These sort of accidents do happen. I get letters for my neighbours with the wrong address on them from time to time. Today I helped the postman identify the correct address for a parcel, which had the wrong number on it.

You deserve an apology. That's it.

You don't need to change your credit card details. If they have your pin number, you should change it.

Thanks for the reply but im going to change the details. It mentioned full number with expiry date and cv2 number as well as credit limit and actual balance.
The bank themselves have lied to me as tey thought the letter was destroyed and are still sticking to there assumpion that the postman got it wrong not that they sent it to the wrong address and whats getting at me is they took 6 days after being informed by my neighbor to contact me and let me know

I wouldn't worry too much about it, I doubt very much your neighbour would have gone on a spending spree with your card.

I think you are right to change your details, you can never be too careful and 20/20 hindsight in a situation like this is no comfort.

As Brendan said, an apology probably would have been sufficient once the bank discovered their mistake although I'm sure this doesn't feel adequate when you have been embarrassed to the degree you have.

Since the bank didn't have the decency to apologise and are making the situation worse by trying to cover their tracks I would request a meeting with the bank manager and insist on a full written apology. I would also look for assurances that their defective postal process would be reviewed and changed to ensure that such an incident wouldn't happen again in the future.

Good luck.
