Hi folks, this may have been asked before, but I can't find anything recent. Is it possible to have mobile phone loss covered on a house contents policy? I know it probably depends on the specific policy, but I'm just looking for some general guidelines. Thanks.

Hi blastman I'm afraid that this is something insurers tend not to cover. There is generally a list that a company will have of what they won't cover on a household policy. What I would sujest is that if it is an expensive phone to take out cover for the phone itself, most network providers will be able to arrange this for you or if not a broker may do. I have my iPhone covered with Zurich so maybe contact them.

Hope this helps. Bear

General guidline is that if mobile telephones are not excluded under the contents definition stated in the policy, then in the event of loss or damage by a stated peril whilst within the house, the policy will provide cover.

Likewise, if they are not excluded under the all risks section of the policy, they are covered for loss or damage whilst within the geographical limits.

Bottom line is....read your policy. Also be mindful that the loss of a mobile phone, even if covered, will be subject to a policy excess, which may exceed the value of the phone. In addition, you may also lose any no claims bonus on renewal which may increase the premium amount by more than the claim was worth.
