Hi, we are getting married New Years Eve and haven't booked our honeymoon yet. We are thinking of Madeira because we only have a week and don't want to spend hours travelling there and back. Can anyone recomment a hotel? We are going to treat ourselves and stay in a 5* or a good 4*. We were planning on either the Regency Palace or Pestana Casino Park but then I read some bad reviews and I really don't want to end up being disappointed in the accommodation on our honeymoon! Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

The Porto Santa Maria Hotel is right in the centre of things on the flat. Most of the other hotels are on the far side of town and up a very steep hill. I did not stay here as I was staying in self catering accommodation but I rember saying that if I were to stay in a hotel in Funchal I would stay there based on location. Tripadvisor reviews are good also.

Mollie, the best hotel in madeira is Reids Palace. Meant to be THE place for a honeymoon or a superior stay. I haven't stayed there but know people that have and am told it is fantastic.

We are off to Madeira for our third time in Nov. Try to get a hotel near the centre of Funchal. The Albergaria Dias was the best hotel, its small and friendly (like the rest of Madeira) in the old section near lots of restaurants. We have stayed at the Pestana Casino Park, 10 minutes walk from the centre, an excellent hotel also. If you stay in the Lido area it’s a more modern area and you are a couple of kilometres out from the centre.
They will be switching the Christmas lights on 26 Nov, a really spectacular display. The fireworks display on news years is in the Guinness book of record.
Have a good trip. Have a look at their site. you would be hard pressed to find a bad hotel, but don't go if you want a lying on the beach holiday, ther are few beaches.

Thank you Mercman and BoxtheFox for mentioning Reid's Palace.
The honeymoon is indeed a very important moment in our lives, therefore if you consider staying with us it will be a true pleasure to welcome you, and we even have a special package for that occasion.

You can check our website and Tripadvisor as well for guest feedback.

Feel free to contact us.

Just one point, Reids must be the most expensive hotel on the Island, but first class, it use to be visited by a lot of celebrities years ago, but a couple of kilometers from town centre

Thanks everyone for all your comments, Reid's looks good alright, but is quite expensive-might look into it again though! Had considered the Pestana Casino but read a few bad reviews on trip advisor so that kind of put us off. Like the look of the CS Atlantic too!
