Two relatives, one in her 70's and one in her 80's and active are planning a week in late Sept/early Oct to Portugal. Can anyone recommend a resort that would be suitable for them? not too hilly and not too windy! They plan to fly from Derry to Faro, So recommendation of hotel in resort is also welcome. I had planned to book flights and source hotels online, but is there a benefit to be had for seniors by booking a package? ie. peace of mind, free transfer from airport etc.?

the above link might be worth looking into, but i seem to remember "liveline" doing an article on it. at least they would be within a group, transfers, tours and food all organised.

Thanks for the link, I was trying to get them to travel with a group but they want their independence. But which resorts should they avoid because of terrain? Albufeira?

If they head to Lagos and stay in the marina area they should be O.K. The train station from Faro is literally across the road from the low rise blocks of apartments that front on to the marina. Beneath one of the apartment blocks there are lots of restaurants etc. From the marina it is about a 10 minute stroll to the old town. This area is mostly flat but rises gently at the back and gradually gets steeper. There is plenty to do in this area.

A bus from Faro airport takes about 10 minutes to get to the bus station and costs less than €2. The train station is about 100 yds from the bus station. A taxi direct from the airport to the train station will cost about €10. The train to Lagos costs about €7.

At the back of the apartments there is a large supermarket.

I couldn't agree more. I also think Lagos is a good choice. Another option would be Alvor, but it's quite hilly, so it may not suit them if they're not all that mobile.

Thanks for the suggestions but I was thinking about a shorter transfer than Lagos or Alvor. Whats Vilamoura like? or somewhere nearer to Faro.

why not fly into Lisbon and try one of the restorts in Estorial which are only a short train trip from Lisbon
