Planning a pre christmas trip to Heidelberg with friends to celebrate both of our wedding anniversies which fall at the same time. Would like to stay in a four or five star hotel for four nights. Has anyone been and what was it like ?. Checked it out on Trip Advisor, looks magical but would love some more ideas and opinions.

Which airport will you fly in to? Frankfurt?

Yes, as far as I know Frankfurt is the closest. I know we will have to get either a bus or train from Frankfurt.

We went to Heidelburg last year as part of a visit to another place(Lake Constance a rail journey away). I wouldn,t especially rate Heidelburg against other places in southern Germany. It was basically a long, no very long, if old shopping street with a cathederal at the end of it with market stalls sticking on to the side of it.There is a castle on the cliff-top above which is striking and looks great when lit up at night. There is a river and main bridge neither of which are really noteworthy. The hotel we stayed in was'nt great but that was our fault for not researching the place beforehand. We went in summer time and I would imagine the place might be better if there is a Christmas Market on though there are plenty of really good Christmas markets in other towns. The food was ok, there was a traditional German food tavern near the bridge which was good and had a good atmosphere. I don't really want to put you off and I'm sure others may have a different and better opinion.

Salzburg is beautiful, particularly if you like music and magical settings. The local university supplies lots of talent. Endless musical events and the place itself is wonderful.
Prague is also very beautiful, lots to enjoy and also lots of historical churches with the most beautiful stain glass windows, and musical recitals. Enjoy Browtal

I have to agree with john martin. I've been all over southern Germany and I don't rate Heidelberg that highly. I think it is its proximity to Frankfurt airport and U.S. army bases that has given it its popularity.

Try Nuremburg or Cologne instead for their Christmas markets.

German brother in law living in Ireland would reccomend Munich or Nurenburg over Heidelberg for a short trip. Anyone agree and where would we fly into for Nuremburg. Thanks

We flew with Ryanair to Memmingen and then to Munich by train. There is a bus waiting outside the airport for transfers to Munich. We opted to stay in the pretty town of Memmingen at the beginning and end of our trip.
Munich is huge, actually we thought it was too big to enjoy. Much prefer a smaller town.

I don't have much to add other than I was there as a kid and was wowed by the castle!

flahers2,

For Nuremburg, I would recommend you fly to Frankfurt FRA. At Frankfurt Airport long-distance station ("Fernbahnhof") you can get an ICE high-speed train directly to Nuremburg.

If you fly with Lufthansa, you can book cheap "Rail&Fly" train tickets online with your flight booking. Details of Rail&Fly are here: .

Rail&Fly is not available from Aer Lingus.

I must say I loved Heidelberg when I visited a few years back. Mind you I was just there on a day trip from Frankfurt so I can't comment on hotels or nightlife.
The castle is fabulous and views of the city with the river Nektar amazing.
Heidelberg has historic interest as being surrounded by mountains it remained untouched during WW2 and therefore has lots of interesting architecture and one of the oldest universities in Europe.
Totally depends on the individual but I found it a very romantic place.....you felt like you'd walked onto the set of The Student Prince.

Saltzburg & Cologne I found really enjoyable as well.

Was in Heidelberg earlier this year- it is a nice town as others have said with one big long main street. It has a lovelly castle - it is a university town plus it is very close to one of the biggest American army bases in Europe so you get alot of soliders there on there to or from the Middle east. It is a nice town but not much to it - would prefer munich- it is about an hour and half from Frankfurt airport.
