Colleagues coming into work when they're not well

You can pick up bugs on buses and trains. Does this mean people with sniffles should not be allowed on buses and trains in case the other passengers catch something? Come on, folks, get serious. You can't expect people with minor ailments like a head cold to stay away from work in case someone else catches that cold.

If you are sick, you are sick - Stay at home and recuperate, this is your duty. Believe me everybody can be done without!!!!!!!

Minor ailments= go to work, respect your colleagues by using the tissue/bin and wash hands rule.

Anything else, stay at home until you are no longer catching.

A couple of years ago our family came down with the winter vomiting bug- doctor said to stay at home for 7 to 10 days, depending on when the symptoms stopped. Although after 5/6 days I could have gone back to work, apparantly I would still have been contagious. Strangely, although I offered by phone to come in, they were very insistant I stayed at home.:p

I think the one thing that we have learned from this thread is that air conditioning is a bad idea and should be done without. This country just doesn’t get hot enough to warrant it.
If you are sick you should assess whether you are well enough to go into work. If you are not then stay at home ‘till you are. If you have some super urgent very important meeting to attend then go and do that and then go home. I agree with Slash though, people can get sick from plenty of sources and generally if you can make it into work you should.

Tell that to someone who is self employed or runs a small business where his or her employees need constant direction.

The "flu" and colds (and most other general, common illness) are viral and are passed on as spray or contact with contaminated surfaces. Long way of saying air conditioning doesn't spread them. It's being around people sneezing, coughing or touching where they have that passes them on.

Agree with everything else though.

I'd tell that someone to up-skill their employees.........and fast!!

Thank you - I'm so tired of people at work blaming the air conditioning and draughts etc etc etc for their colds. One person even said she needed to get antibiotics for a neck infection because she was sitting near an air con vent. What a load of rubbish.

Fair enough - but what is the thing with air-con though?

I mean it definitely does have a detrimental affect on some people - causing coughing etc. I have expereinced this many times. Is it simply the drying of the atmosphere = dry throat?

I thought it was more the fact that the same old air full of germs was being recycled over and over in a room and no fresh air was circulating.

Or maybe sitting under the freezing air con lowers your resistance because your body is constantly fighting to stay warm so your immune system suffers?

I dunno - but I hate air con!

When all the build up to the Asian flu hype was happening , my company decided to take away all form of sick pay support therefore ensuring people had to come into work, I've often went to work sick probably spreading infection but it is managements duty to enfore H&S so send me home to protect the rest of the staff.
No one was sent home ever.
