Hi Folks
I had a credit card account with a certain provider and over two years ago i decided to use another provider and stopped using the old card. The account was cleared and nothing was owed. I may have forgotten to actually get them to cancel it but didn't realise this as i got no statements as there was nothing outstanding.
Then I got a statement last year with the government duty which was when I realised it was still open . I had a discussion with the provider who said that the account had to be cleared before it could be cancelled and reluctantly paid the outstanding amount and made an assumption that it would then be closed.
Again no statements were received until again this year the govt duty was due and now I really don’t want to pay it. Bear in mind that not one transaction has occurred on this account in over 2 years. I know that I may have been remiss in not making sure that the account was closed but does anyone know of a way out of this without having to pay the outstanding amount…which includes now a late fee and interest.
