Running the lights at Newlands Cross

Has anyone else noticed this is getting worse?

Even giving the benefit of the doubt to those running the orange lights, I saw 5 cars run the red lights this morning.

Are they insane?

And If I notice it happening and getting worse, is there any chance the Gardai might do the same?

Why not use cameras to automatically get those who run the reds?

Feel better now :)

Forward your concern to the garda website e mail. I think this is the Press Office address and they will bring to the attention of the head of the Traffic Section.

Newlands is a big junction and if you enter on amber you have a lot of ground to cover before you are off the junction.

As far as I can see, running red lights is now the norm at every traffic junction in the country.

Where I live there is a set of lights at a school with a pedestrian light. People always break the red lights, one of which is followed by a "Green Man" and is on a slightly blind turn and I'm amazed that no child has been killed

I travel up from the Belgard Road of an evening turning left towards Kildare and every night, I see people running the red light. Same happens with the feeder light from the Naas Road left onto the Belgard Road, crazy there some morning. I'm surprised at the stupidity of people as there has been fatal accidents there this year.

BTW, does anyone know if the overpass is going to be built?, I did hear it was going to start in the late autumn.

It is proposed to upgrade the Newlands Cross N7 Naas Road/ R113 Belgard/ Fonthill Road at-grade junction to a grade-separated junction, resulting in the creation of an N7 overpass. The N7 mainline will be raised up above its existing level while the
Belgard/ Fonthill Road (R113) will remain at the current level. Resulting in the N7 mainline crossing over the Belgard/ Fonthill Road and will be approximately 9m above the existing road level at its highest point.

Final tenders were due June 2010.

Bring on the 85,000 vehicle traffic management. We'll be begging for the roundabout back :)

And I counted the cars running the lights after they had turned red. I did not count the 9 odd cars that went through on orange.

Trucks are by far the worst offenders here, they dont even slow down when approaching the junction.

I'd actually love to count the number of red light offenders some day and then show the RSA and An Garda Siochana how bad this junction really is.

That particular light should probably be a Yield sign or a flashing amber arrow outside of rush hour in the evening.

The average number I see would be two to three when light turns red around canal bridge harolds cross and also down by patricks cathedral heading to kevin street from dolpins barn direction.

Do you think we could it into a tourism thing like running the bulls in Pamplona?

We could do with the money

Lights take a long time to cycle back at Newland's Cross, I'd imagine that's why jumping might be more prevelant there. Take a chance, save yourself 2/3 minutes.

They have a good system across the water IMO...the lights go from Red to Amber to Green. That way when the lights go green the stationary driver is ready to go. No point in breaking a red light then as you'll definately be hit!

While cycling, I'll generally move off sharply from a junction as soon as my lights go green. About 2-3 times a week, I find myself facing a driver blustering through on red, amazed that anyone else is using his/her piece of road.
