Do I need to employ accountant/payroll company?

Hi there, am hoping to employ a childminder in my own home to care for my children. She will be working 4 days a week, so will be earning under the €352 a week threshold for employee PRSI. I think I am correct in saying she would also not be liable for tax on this salary? As I understand, I am liable for employers PRSI of 8.5%. Am trying to work out whether I need to pay an accountant/payroll company or whether I can do the relevant stuff myself (i.e. register as an employer, complete relevant forms and send in the PRSI contributions, issue payslips). I have had a look on the Revenue site and the registration and returns procedure looks relativelty straighforward. The only thing I am not sure about is payslips - is there a template on the net for the type of payslip I would have to issue? Or can you buy template payslips? (sorry if this is a stupid question but I don't have my own business so have never had to deal with any of this before!)

Dont need an accountant or payroll company

Register as an employer in your name or wife's name
Calulate what is due for year and set up monthly direct debit for paye/prsi
Do payslips on word/excel as long as they look ok

Some one on here might email you a template for payslip

Hi there

If you pm me your email address, I have a simple paylsip template I can send you.

As papervalue said, you wont need to an accountant or payroll company.

Tomorrow

Thanks to you both - Tomorrow, I have pm'ed you my e-mail address

Looking back at my first post, I think I'm wrong about the PAYE situation - if the childminder is a single person earning 350 a week, I am guessing that her tax credit would be 1830, meaning that the rest of her salary would be taxed at 20% - so something like a €60 deduction per week for tax but no PRSI payable by her?

I assume you would count single person 1830 and paye credit 1830 €3,660 per year

Hi,

I am connected to Sage and we offer a free payroll package for upto 5 employees. This might help you to calculate your employers PRSI? It comes with 30 days free support from the download date so you could phone in for some advice if you need it.

Re payslips you could try the print on plain paper option in the software and see how happy you were with it. Other options would be to purchase some pre printed payslips

Your questions leave me a bit worried about what you are taking on here. You do not determine what your employees tax credits are. He/She/You must apply for a notice of tax credits which the Revenue will calculate. You apply by sending back the P45 which your employee will give you from their previous employment or by filling in form P46 and/or form 12A.

don't forget as an employer you will have to make a P35 return annually. It's not too difficult though.
