importing a boat

Thinking of buying a boat from Singapore and importing it here for personal use. The boat is being sold through a broker.

Anyone got any experience of doing something similar and if so would you recommend it?. Were there any hidden charges and is it worth the extra effort?.

Thanks,

Priscilla.

Thanks Towger,

Wow, what a beauty, I'm drooling away here.

The boat I'm looking at is a 29 foot cruiser selling 34,000 neg , similar sell here for about 45,000, we thought we might get it here for 40,000.

What you think,

Priscilla.

If she will fit in a 40 foot container (have to take off keel!?!) the costs of shipping from port to port should not be too expensive. I got a quote from memory of about 1,300 USD about 6 years ago from SE Asia to Dublin Port for a container of furniture.

The 'old lads' (don't ask) from again from memory paid about 8k (mainly insurance) to ship a 35 footer on a low loader from Germany to Dublin 3 years ago. Add VAT @ 21% and Duty ?? on the cost of the yacht and you will be blown out of the water... I suppose if she originated in the EU and you got the paperwork... or just sail her in...:)

Offer 34-40K for one selling here for 45K and you may well get your hands bitten off!

Unfortunately, sale agreed, I think around the 45 mark.

We thought if we picked up this one for 30, we might end up with a good saving. We're awaiting prices back from transportation companies and further information from the sellers broker, as the boat originated in Europe we assumed vat has already been paid which would mean we would be liable to 1.7% on import.

Anyway, we will await quotes to see if it's feasible.

Thanks again,

Priscilla.
