Hi there. We are going on holiday in 2 weeks with our 3 year old daughter to Lagos, Portugal. I wonder has anyone been here and can they recommend places to go/not to go etc?
I have seen an aqua land place and also a marine park with Dolphins. Are these worth a visit?

Any help would be appreciated:)

We were in Alvor in May with our 4 kids 1yr, 3yr,6yr and 8 yr old. We spent a great day at Zoomarine, it cost 80euro but everything inside included, pools, waterslides, rides, dolphin show, sealions, bird show, Aquarium(except food, plenty available and they don't roast you for it either!). You could easily spend a day there. But saying that it was the older 2 who loved it and the younger 2 well we could have been anywhere! The 3 yr old though still talks about the dolphins. On the other hand we paid 80 euro for a 1 1/2 hour boat trip along the coast. This was a disaster as all of us were sea-sick as the sea is quite choppy near the cliffs. The boat owners and guides were great but in hindsight a boat trip at sea with kids not great idea....they also do river trip which may be more suitable, but still I believe very pricey.

Best options and for free which our 3 yr loved most, beaches....and there are so many of them!We had hire car so travelled to many beaches off the beaten trail.

Enjoy your trip and if in Alvor eat in Captains Table we found them really child friendly.

Thought i'd resurrect this old thread rather than start a new one. Two adults 2 kids 15 &16 yr old. been to Mojacar and Peurto Pollensa in the last few years and found the towns and beaches really good, especially PP. Can get decent priced flights with Ryanair to Faro 6-18 july, Looking at renting Villa/Apt. Kids still into Waterparks TG. Would Lagos fit the bill? Any other suggestions? Would the Atlantic in early/mid July be an awful lot colder than the Med?
An afterthought, would Albufuera be more appropriate?

Just to warn you my son and a big gang going on 'an after Leaving Cert' holiday on those dates to Lagos dont know what type of place it is but I'm told that the beer is cheap (he has been warned) but he also told me it's becoming popular for holiday for this age group after leaving Cert so maybe someone that has been there can let you know how suitable it is for younger children. I'm just back from Lisbon and loved it and visited the coast for the day and I'll definitely be back to that area.

Lagos is cut in two effectively by a river or canal. On one side you have the lovely old town and on the other the marina and train station area. The main beach is on the train station side and a bit of a walk from the town side. There is a smaller beach on the town side but not a Brittas Bay type beach. Lagos is lovely, lots of fish restaurants and small bars. Having said that it is a bit of a distance from anywhere. We rented a one bedroomed apartment for a week that was very reasonably priced.

Albufeira is very lively and may not be the best place to go with a 15 and 16 year old, unless you are prepared to spend a lot of time keeping an eye on them to make sure they don't get into trouble. Personally, I would recommend Alvor, which is very family oriented with a great beach and lots of nice restaurants and bars.

There are no night clubs in Alvor, but Praia da Rocha, which is only about 3 miles away is very lively. One thing to watch out for if you go to Alvor with your teenagers is that they don't head off in a taxi to Praia da Rocha for the night while telling you they are having a quiet night in Alvor!

As for weather, it should be quite warm in July (probably around 30 celsius) without the stifling heat you sometimes get in the Mediterranean.

My sister and I are off to Lagos for a week at the start of July. The reason we picked there is that we were told it was not a mad drinking type resort. Getting a bit worried if there are loads of leaving cert messers. Just what I want on a relaxing break!

Any idea of how to get from airport to Lagos. Dont really want to take train...any recommendations for shuttle.

Just to reassure you re Lagos - it's a pretty quiet town rather than a resort - there's no night clubs there so any leaving cert kids will soon realise this and head off to albufiera/praia da rocha or the more happening algarve resorts for more 'exotic' nightlife.

Great, looking forward to the break. Going next Sunday. Anyone know if Laser is widely used in this area. I dont want to bring a wad of cash, just get cash out as needed from the hole in the wall.

I've booked the transfer through Resorthoppa.ie - I hope this is ok - it worked out at a total of 50 for a transfer there and back for the two of us on a shared shuttle.

Any recommendations for Restaurants etc, also appreciated.

There is also "free" internet in the area. There are wifi zones in the Old Town and just outside the walls at the top of the city there is a state sponsored internet outlet where you can use internet for a half hour for free. Some of the bars have free internet at their counter as well.
