ps I wonder just wonder will their be a resignation....

Ivor's career as a TD was over before these revelations, so he may not be concerned about what people think about his expenses claims. He's never going to face the wrath of the electorate.

Long long over. Let's not forget he lost his seat, so the good folks of his "home" no longer wanted him and then nobody voted for him for the Seanad. Despite the fact that he had to give up his cabinet post because he took free paint jobs and tried to stop employees leaving by offering to buy them a new car (on expenses no doubt) and then losing his seat and then failing to get into the Seanad, Bertie still nominated him.

The sad thing is, nobody's really that surprised, why would they be? I expected his speech to be like that fast show character "Me, the 13th Duke of Wybourne? Here? At a french maids finishing school? At three o'clock in the morning? With my reputation?"

"Me, Ivor Callerly? Still in politics? Allowed unvouched expenses? With my reputation?"

You're being too generous to the good citizens of Dublin North. Ivor got 20% of the vote in a 3 seater (containing Richard Bruton, Sean Haughey and Finian McGrath) and only lost out to Finian McGrath on transfers. It had been a 4 seater and if it had remained so he would have been elected on the first or second count.

I'm sure many there still regard him as a class act.

Dublin North Central is/was his constituency.

Regardless of how he is perceived by those 'good citizens', he dirtied his bib with Brian Cowen the way he mis-managed his resignation on Budget Day. This week's revelations and further mis-management means that, politically, he's on his way out.

And, IIRC, he had some run-ins with planning permission on his Cork address.

You cant really say this - there would have been a different mix of candidates had it been a 4 seater. Some potential candidates were put off because of the reduction to 3 seats. There was also a belief that with 3 seats, the result was a foregone conclusion - the 3 TDs who were expected to hold seats did so.

If it had been a 4 seater, FG would have almost certainly run a second candidate and FF probably would have run a third. SF may also have run - they are rumoured to have not run a candidate as they thought it would damage Finian McGraths chances in a 3 seater. Any other FF candidate would have beaten Callely and possibly a second FG candidate - the second FG candidate who was being considered got elected in a neighbouring constituency.

Nevertheless, the number of votes Callely gets is quite high considering his unpopularity. Its noticeable that he performs extremely poorly with transfers from other parties. I think he has a core group of supporters in one part of Clontarf, but is extremely unpopular around the remainder of the constituency including among a lot of FF supporters.

At the last election, most of his canvassers appeared to be from outside the constituency - I remember tackling one about this asking why the local party members arent doing his canvassing.

Who ? Terence Flanagan in Dublin North East ? I never heard of him being considered for North Central - I thought Gerry Breen was better placed to be on the FG ticket in North Central.

Anyway .. having lived for a long time in North Central, I was blessed with opportunities to not vote for Charlie Haughey, and then Ivor Callelly.

He got 20% of the votes cast. Your analysis is interesting but doesn't detract from that essential point.

I've always wondered who these people are. Are they generic FF members/supporters who live in Clontarf who are following party orders re: vote management?

He's from North Central and was a Councillor for Artane at the time of the election. Was being groomed as Richard Brutons successor.

:D

Should a senator lose his job because he lied or becuase he stole or do they cancel each other out if they do both, like you know as in two negatives equal a positive.
