Guys..Im currently driving a 1.8 petrol salon car but am in need of 4x4 to pull/launch boat as getting sick of borrowing. Does anyone know the rules for commerical 4x4's. Can anyone insure them if not company set up.? as just insured for 2 people. Is it worth looking in north and bringing one in.? Any help much appricated.

Anybody can drive and insure a commercial vehicle.

You just need to bear in mind the DOE Costs as you mean to go along.

Heading to the UK to get a vehicle, especially a commerical, is always recommonded and that is mainly due to the fact that VRT will cost you only €50 to bring the vehicle home.

Think strongly as well regarding the tax of a high CO2 commerical vehicle and also the MPG is terrible.

I had a SWB Landcruiser and my god did it drink the diesel and I didn't have heavy loads nor was I towing anything.

Isn't tax irrelevant when it comes to the engine etc? Commercial's are taxed differently to non-commercials?

I know mine is!

You are correct. My employer always paid my tax so I never really noticed. I thought the 1st Jan 2009 Motor Tax rates applied to all vehicles.

See here for the unladen weight.

we were looking at a mit l200 crewcab two weeks ago english reg, duty €800odd euro to clear it. guy who had bought it couldnt afford to clear it. we has a mit pajero few years back that really used fuel like it was goin out of fashion. just purchased a ford transit swb crew cab.

DOE issue a certificate and on taxing veh u have to purchase another cert from tax office for few euro to tax it. commercial tax €288 for year. I know we had to get gaurd to stamp a piece of paper and witness my husband's first van to say it was comm as he had private veh until that.

what about a 4x4 car the subaru legacy diesel perhaps.

audi A8 quatro tdi.

You can tax a 4x4 either as private or commercial, private is dearer for tax but then insuring it privately is cheaper, check out the costs and weigh it up. Also I had a lot of trouble getting commercial insurance (the dearer one) for my dad on his jeep thus year, Icwas surprised at how many companies would not quote because he is not 'actradesman carrying tools' - nuts, he's a vet, so much less risk to an ins co. I would have thought than someone carrying expensive tools...
