I have a HP 4280 printer/scanner/copier. Approx 2 years old, very pleased with it. However its currently out of order, message comes up "print cartridges missing or not detected". I have got the cartridges checked out and they are ok. Anybody got any suggestions which doesn't involve a professionnal repairman? or would a new printer would be cheaper?

I have one too. IIRC, I paid €46 for it (refurbished) on dabs.ie. It's a terrible shame, but these kinds of appliances are simply not worth repairing from an economic point of view.

it could be a driver error - how about uninstalling it and reinstalling it again, its worth a try

There are two suggestions on this forum: [broken link removed] :

''What's probably happening is there is excess ink on caked on to the contacts on the carriage (I think that's what they're called). They're pretty easy to clean and the cleaning process takes about a minute. Just remove whatever cartridges are in the printer, take a cloth that will leave a minimal amount of lint, and wipe at the dark spongey contacts located just below where the cartridges would sit (that is, on my HP C4280, as other models might have them somewhere slightly different, but they should be right around the cartridges' spot). When the caked on ink is removed and all you are wiping at is the sponge, insert the new cartridge and the printer should work.''

or, failing that:

''1 - Hold the power and cancel button down (X)
2 - When it say enter special key combo press Blue, Green then Grey.
3 - Press BLUE again twice, now it says resets menu.
4 - Press the OK button and press blue twice to get to semi-full reset
5 - Press OK for semi-full reset, printer should shutdown. Wait for 30 secs before turning it back on using the power button and follow the prompts to set the language and the country. If this won't work, then you need to replace cartridges.
''

Don't know whether either of the above will work, but they might be worth a try!

hi all,

thanks for your help and suggestions. Unfortunately none of your suggesstions worked. So the best solution at this stage is to replace the printer, which is a pity, but economically it not worth doing a repair on it. Many thanks again for your advice.Jim

I know this is not following the thread but I didn't want to open up a new one. I have old HP Laserjet 1200 printer, which is working fine. Just bought new laptop - and the printer can't connect because it has a parallel cable. Does anyone know where I can get a convertor to allow me to print using the HP Laserjet via the USB on the laptop. I asked in a couple of Computer stores, including the place I bought the laptop, and they basically thought it was very funny - using such old technology. I've googled it and came up with something which says it has a 36-pin connector. I haven't a clue how many pins are in the HP printer cable. Help!

What you want is one of these - http://www.cables.ie/computer-cables/usb/usb-cables/p194_usb-to-parallel-converter.html

A parallel to USB converter - you can try Maplin, Argos, PC World, on-line etc, but don't go back to the outfit that ridiculed your need as a customer.

NOTE: You may encounter problems other than the connector (driver software etc) but if you post the details here someone may have a fix.

I have no affiliation with the web-site above - Google is to blame !

Many thanks for that - it was actually PC world where I bought the laptop and then went back looking for a solution for the printer - and where the young upstart with pointy shoes, slicked up hair and a badly fitting suit saw fit to have a laugh at my outdatedness in terms of technology. I'll try the other options you mentioned. Cheers :)

Just looked up Maplin online, their Parallel to USB Converter is over £24 - Cables.ie is just above €13. Is there a huge difference in the product or is this currency conversion working the other way for once!

I've never used one of these converters myself, but have been told that they're not great i.e. the print quality may be affected and they are very slow.

I guess you can return it for a refund if it you have any problems with it.
